Real vs Fake Crystal Bracelet — 5 Easy Tests to Know (2026)

How to Tell if Your Crystal Bracelet is Real or Fake — 5 Easy Tests (2026 Guide)

Published by GemKrishna | Reading time: 4 minutes

The Indian market is flooded with fake crystals. Glass beads, dyed plastic, synthetic stones — all sold as "natural healing crystals" at attractive prices. If you have ever wondered whether your bracelet is genuinely natural or just pretty glass, this guide is for you.

At GemKrishna, we get this question on WhatsApp almost every day. After 15+ years in the gemstone business, here are the 5 tests we use ourselves — that you can do at home right now.

Why Does It Matter?

Natural crystals form over millions of years inside the earth. They carry a molecular structure that synthetic or glass copies simply do not have. For healing, astrological, or chakra purposes, only a natural stone carries genuine energy. A glass bead looks the same but does nothing.

More importantly — you deserve to know what you are paying for.

Test 1: The Temperature Test (Most Reliable)

How to do it: Hold the stone in your hand for 30 seconds, then press it gently against your cheek or lips.

What it tells you:

Real crystal: Stays noticeably cool even after being held. Natural stones are slow to absorb heat.
Fake (glass or plastic): Warms up quickly to match your body temperature within seconds.

This is the single most reliable home test. Glass heats up fast. Crystal does not.

Test 2: The Scratch Test

How to do it: Try scratching the surface of the stone gently with a steel key or the edge of a coin.

What it tells you:

Real crystal (quartz family): Cannot be scratched by a key. Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale — harder than steel.
Fake (glass): Glass has a hardness of around 5.5 and can be scratched by a key or steel.

Important: Do this in a hidden spot on the bracelet bead, not the front. And be gentle — you are testing, not destroying.

Test 3: Check for Air Bubbles (Visual Test)

How to do it: Hold the bead up to a bright light source — sunlight or a torch — and look through it carefully.

What it tells you:

Real crystal: May have natural inclusions (tiny lines, cloudiness, internal patterns). These are signs of natural formation.
Fake (glass): Often has perfectly round air bubbles inside. Round bubbles are a dead giveaway of glass manufacturing.

Natural crystals are never perfectly bubble-free in the same way glass is. Natural inclusions look irregular. Glass bubbles look round and uniform.

Test 4: The Weight Test

How to do it: Hold the bracelet in one hand and a glass bead bracelet (or cheap fashion bracelet) in the other.

What it tells you:

Real crystal: Natural gemstone beads are noticeably heavier than glass or plastic of the same size.
Fake: Feels lighter, almost hollow-feeling.

You may need to try this a few times to develop a feel for it. Once you hold a real crystal bracelet and compare it to a fake, the difference is instantly obvious.

Test 5: The Price Reality Check

How to do it: Compare the price to what natural gemstones actually cost to source and cut.

What it tells you:

If someone is selling an "Amethyst bracelet" for ₹99 or ₹149, it is not natural Amethyst. Genuine natural gemstone beads cost significantly more to source, cut, and string. Real bracelets start from ₹299–₹399 for common stones like Clear Quartz or Howlite and go much higher for premium stones like Cat's Eye or Hessonite.

A price that seems too good to be true almost always means the stone is not real.

The Safest Way: Buy Lab-Certified

Home tests help but they are not foolproof. The only way to be 100% certain is to buy from a seller who provides lab certification for their stones.

At GemKrishna, every bracelet is made from natural gemstones tested and certified by GJSPC (Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India) labs. You can verify your certificate on their official website after purchase — no trust required, just facts.

If a seller cannot provide lab certification, that tells you everything you need to know.
