Quick answer: If you are wearing Rudraksha for the first time and have no specific advice from a pandit or astrologer, start with a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha. It is the most widely recommended bead for daily wear, traditionally linked with calm and general wellbeing, and suitable for men, women and children. For a specific purpose, such as study, career, relationships, prosperity or protection, a different mukhi is traditionally chosen. The table below shows which one.
People search this question in many ways: best Rudraksha for me, which Rudraksha to wear for job, Rudraksha for students, Rudraksha for money, best mukhi for my problem. The honest answer always starts with two things: what you want the bead for, and making sure the bead you buy is genuine. This guide covers both.
Please note: the associations below come from Vedic and Puranic tradition and are held as belief and personal experience, not guaranteed results. Different texts and traditions sometimes differ, especially for the higher mukhis. Rudraksha is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.

Best Rudraksha by purpose
- First Rudraksha / peace of mind / daily wear: 5 Mukhi. Simple, affordable and suitable for almost everyone.
- Students, exams, memory and communication: 4 Mukhi, often worn alongside a 5 Mukhi.
- Relationships and marriage harmony: 2 Mukhi or Gauri Shankar.
- Confidence and courage: 3 Mukhi, 9 Mukhi or 11 Mukhi.
- Career, leadership and business: 12 Mukhi, 13 Mukhi or 11 Mukhi.
- Money and prosperity: 7 Mukhi (Mahalakshmi); higher collectors' beads like 17, 19 and 21 Mukhi are traditionally linked with abundance.
- New beginnings and removing obstacles: 8 Mukhi or Ganesh Rudraksha.
- Protection: 5, 9, 10, 11 or 14 Mukhi, depending on tradition and advice.
- Saturn (Shani) periods such as Sade Sati: 7 Mukhi or 14 Mukhi are the most commonly advised.
If a pandit or astrologer has already advised you based on your kundli, follow that advice. If you have no advice at all, start with 5 Mukhi. You can add more beads later.
Is a higher mukhi always better?
No. A higher mukhi is rarer and more expensive, not automatically "stronger" for you. Many experienced wearers only ever use 5 Mukhi. Choose the bead that fits your purpose. And be very careful with cheap 1 Mukhi and other rare-mukhi beads: these are the most commonly faked, so an individual X-ray report is essential.
Nepal or Indonesian: does origin change the mukhi?
No. A 7 Mukhi is a 7 Mukhi whether it grew in Nepal or Indonesia (Java); the deity and planet stay the same. Nepal beads are larger and rarer, so they cost more; Indonesian beads are smaller and more affordable, which makes higher mukhis (14 Mukhi and above) accessible. We explain this in detail in our guide Nepal vs Indonesian Rudraksha.
How GemKrishna helps you choose, and what happens after you order
Choosing the right bead is where most people get stuck, so we do it with you. Here is every step, from your first message to after delivery:
- You tell us what you need. Message us on WhatsApp, or browse and pick a bead on the site. Our guidance is free and unlimited. We recommend by your purpose, not by what we want to sell, and we will tell you if a less expensive bead will do the job.
- We pick the best bead for you. From our Nepal and Indonesian (Java) Rudraksha, we select the bead that fits the mukhi, size and budget you need. If what you need is not listed, ask us and we will source it.
- We verify it. The bead is checked before it goes any further.
- Independent lab report and X-ray. The bead is tested by GJSPC Laboratory, Delhi, which issues a lab report and an X-ray report under its own report number. You can verify the report on gjspc.in, and you can ask to see it before you pay.
- Real photos of your actual bead. We photograph the exact bead, so what you see is what you receive, with its size and weight stated.
- Made to order, if you want to wear it. If you are ordering a pendant, bracelet or mala, it is made after your order by our experienced karigars. The beads, size, arrangement, cord or wire and metal fittings are hand-picked for you. Around 90% of our orders are made this way, specially for the customer.
- Cleansed and energised. Every piece is cleansed overnight on a selenite plate and placed before the deities at our mandir for pran pratishtha. Basic energisation is free, and for bracelets you can choose from a few puja and energisation options before ordering.
- Packed with its papers. Your order ships with its lab report and X-ray report, plus a free raw selenite plate so you can cleanse and recharge it at home.
- Shipped across India from Delhi.
- Looked after afterwards. 30-day returns on standard products (return shipping is paid by the customer; custom-made pieces are not eligible). For bracelets, a wrong wrist size is remade free, a broken strand or loose beads are repaired free (you pay shipping), and we will restring your GemKrishna bracelet for life if you send the beads back.
Popular ways to wear your mukhi
- Single bead as a pendant in silver, german silver or with a gemstone cap, for example our 7 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha with capping and chain.
- Bracelet, alone or combined with crystals, for example our 5 Mukhi Rudraksh & Karungali Bracelet or 5 Mukhi Rudraksh & Tiger Eye Bracelet. See all Rudraksha bracelets.
- Jaap mala for chanting. See our Rudraksha malas.
Traditional wearing guidance (in brief)
Traditions differ, but common guidance is: wear your Rudraksha for the first time on a Monday morning after bathing, chant "Om Namah Shivaya" (or the bead's own mantra) a few times, and keep the bead clean and dry. Many people remove it before using soap, swimming or visiting a cremation ground. Ask us if you want the specific mantra for your mukhi.
