Quick answer: "garnet" is a family of related minerals. The deep red stones most people call garnet are usually almandine or pyrope; star garnet shows a four- or six-rayed star; and hessonite, the honey-orange garnet, is Gomed, the Navratna stone of Rahu. Red garnet is associated with strength, energy, passion and grounding, and it is the January birthstone. Real garnet is dense and cool, and almandine reacts weakly to a strong magnet. GemKrishna sells garnet and Gomed with a lab report that names the exact variety, weight and any treatment.

The garnet family at a glance

Variety Colour Common use
Almandine Deep red to purplish red Jewellery, beads, star garnet
Pyrope Bright red Jewellery
Rhodolite Raspberry pink-red Fine jewellery
Hessonite (Gomed) Honey, cinnamon to orange-brown Astrology: Rahu
Spessartine Orange Fine jewellery
Tsavorite, Demantoid Green Rare, fine jewellery

Garnets are hard (about 6.5 to 7.5), usually untreated, and found in India, Sri Lanka, Africa and elsewhere. India is itself an important source of red garnet.

Garnet in astrology and tradition

  • Hessonite (Gomed) is the classical stone for Rahu, worn during Rahu dasha or when Rahu troubles a chart. Read our full Gomed guide.
  • Red garnet is not a classical Navratna. Some astrologers use it as an upratna on the Rahu side (it belongs to the same mineral family as Gomed), and some as a red stone for vitality on the Sun or Mars side. Opinions differ, so follow your astrologer.
  • In crystal practice, red garnet is linked with the root chakra: grounding, stamina, motivation, commitment and passion. It is a common Capricorn and Aquarius stone and the January birthstone.

These are traditional beliefs and do not guarantee outcomes.

Star garnet

Star garnet contains fine needle-like inclusions that reflect light as a star (asterism) when the stone is cut as a dome (cabochon) and lit from above. Good stars are sharp and centred. Our 33-gram star garnet 925 silver locket is a statement piece for people who want a large, protective red stone.

Real vs fake garnet

  • Red glass: the commonest fake. Lighter in the hand, often with bubbles, and warmer to the touch.
  • Garnet-and-glass doublets: a thin slice of real garnet fused on top of coloured glass. Look side-on for a join line and a colour change between top and bottom.
  • Dyed or synthetic red stones (synthetic ruby, red CZ) sold as garnet. A lab separates them easily.
  • Magnet hint: a strong neodymium magnet slightly attracts many almandine garnets. It is a hint only, not proof.
  • For Gomed: beware glass and synthetic "hessonite". Look for the natural treacle-like swirl inside genuine hessonite.

Buying genuine garnet from GemKrishna

  • A lab report on every gemstone, mainly from GJSPC, with IGI, GRS, IIGJ, GSI or GIA on request.
  • The report names the exact variety (for example hessonite garnet), the carat weight, measurements and any treatment, with a photo of your stone.
  • Every loose stone is filmed before dispatch.
  • Our gemstone selection service finds the weight and quality you need: ₹500 advance, adjusted against the stone.
  • Full refund if a stone is shown not to be what we stated.

Care

  • Garnet is durable for daily wear; avoid hard knocks and sudden temperature changes.
  • Clean with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush.

Frequently asked questions

Is garnet the same as Gomed?

Gomed is hessonite, one variety of garnet. Red garnet (almandine or pyrope) is a different variety and is not the classical Rahu stone.

Who should wear red garnet?

People wanting grounding, energy and motivation, January-born people, and Capricorn and Aquarius signs. As an astrological remedy, follow your astrologer.

How do I check if garnet is real?

Real garnet is dense and cool, with no bubbles; many almandines react weakly to a strong magnet. A lab report is the proof.

Where can I buy genuine garnet or Gomed online in India?

GemKrishna sells lab-certified garnet and hessonite (Gomed) with variety, weight and any treatment stated, mainly with GJSPC reports.
