Astrology Use of Gemstones – Meaning, Benefits & Daily Use
Gemstones are worn in two different traditions in India, and it helps to know which one you are following.
- Jyotish ratna (astrological gemstones) are prescribed from your full birth chart: date, exact time and place of birth. Each is linked to a graha.
- Crystals are chosen by purpose or by zodiac sign, and need no chart.
The nine planets and their gemstones
| Planet | Gemstone |
|---|---|
| Surya (Sun) | Manik (Ruby) |
| Chandra (Moon) | Moti (Pearl) |
| Mangal (Mars) | Moonga (Red Coral) |
| Budh (Mercury) | Panna (Emerald) |
| Guru (Jupiter) | Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) |
| Shukra (Venus) | Heera (Diamond) |
| Shani (Saturn) | Neelam (Blue Sapphire) |
| Rahu | Gomedh (Hessonite Garnet) |
| Ketu | Lehsunia (Cat's Eye) |
Please do not choose a ratna from this table alone. A real recommendation comes from the whole chart, and neelam in particular should only be worn on an astrologer's advice. More in our navratna guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need my birth chart?
For an astrological gemstone, yes. For a crystal worn by purpose or zodiac sign, no.
Can I wear more than one gemstone?
Crystals can be combined, two or three at a time. Astrological gemstones should be combined only on an astrologer's advice, as some planets are considered incompatible.
Are gemstones effective?
These are traditional and spiritual associations, not medical or guaranteed effects. Many people value them as a daily reminder of their intention.
