How Many Carats of Gemstone Should You Wear? A Simple Guide Using Body Weight

A lot of people ask me, “What carat gemstone should I wear?”, “How many grams should my gemstone be?”, or “What type of gemstone should I wear?”

Before answering these questions, it is important to understand how gemstone weight is measured.

Carat, Gram & Ratti — What’s the Difference?

The international standard for measuring the weight of gemstones is the carat (ct).

1 carat = 0.2 grams

In Indian and Vedic astrology, gemstone weight is also commonly measured in ratti.

A commonly used conversion is:

1 ratti ≈ 0.91 carat
1 carat ≈ 1.11 ratti

So, if your gemstone recommendation is given in ratti, you can easily convert it into carats when choosing your stone.

How Much Gemstone Should You Wear According to Your Body Weight?

A commonly followed guideline in Vedic gemstone recommendations is:

1 ratti of gemstone for every 12 kg of body weight.

The simple formula is:

Body Weight (kg) ÷ 12 = Recommended Ratti Weight

For example, if your body weight is 84 kg:

84 ÷ 12 = 7 ratti

So, according to this calculation, the recommended gemstone weight would be approximately 7 ratti.

Does the Gemstone Have to Be Exactly 7 Ratti?

No. You do not necessarily have to find a gemstone of the exact calculated weight.

You can generally consider a variation of around ±0.5 ratti from the calculated ratti weight.

For example, if your calculation comes to 7 ratti, you can consider a gemstone weighing approximately:

6.5 ratti to 7.5 ratti

Similarly, if you are selecting your gemstone according to its carat weight, a variation of around ±0.5 carat from the recommended carat weight can also be considered.

This makes it easier to select a suitable natural gemstone, since every stone is different and finding an exact weight is not always practical.

Which Gemstone Should You Wear?

Weight is only one part of choosing a gemstone.

The type of gemstone you should wear depends on the reason you are wearing it and, particularly for astrological purposes, factors such as your birth chart and the recommendation of your astrologer.

Therefore, before wearing a gemstone for Vedic or astrological purposes, it is always better to consult a knowledgeable astrologer or gemstone expert.
