In short: A natural Rudraksha can last a lifetime if you keep it dry, clean and away from soap and chemicals, oil it lightly now and then, and restring it when the cord wears. What most care guides miss is that the bracelet needs care too: elastic, thread, German silver and 925 silver capping each need something different. This guide covers the bead, the stringing, the selenite plate in your GemKrishna box, and the one thing almost nobody tells you to keep: your lab report.

Quick care rules

Do Avoid
Rinse in plain water when needed and dry in the shade Soap, shampoo, detergent, perfume and chlorine water
Clean the grooves with a soft, dry brush Hard brushes, pins or anything that scratches the lines
Oil lightly once every few months Soaking the bead in oil, or oiling elastic
Store dry, in a cloth pouch or box Damp places, plastic bags, direct sun, heaters
Restring when the cord looks worn Waiting until it snaps

Caring for the Rudraksha bead

Cleaning

Sweat and dust collect in the mukhi grooves over time. Every couple of weeks, brush the bead gently with a soft, dry brush (a clean soft toothbrush works). If it needs more, rinse it in plain lukewarm water, pat it dry with a cotton cloth, and let it dry fully in the shade before you wear it again.

Oiling

Oil keeps the bead from drying out and brings back its natural colour. Many families use sandalwood, olive or mustard oil; traditions differ, and any light, pure oil is fine. Put a few drops on a soft brush, coat the bead thinly, leave it for a few hours, then wipe off the extra. Once every two or three months is enough for most people. Don't soak the bead.

Heat and sun

Rudraksha is a natural seed. Strong heat dries it out and can crack it, so never dry it in direct sun, on a heater or with a hair dryer.

Indonesian vs Nepal beads

Indonesian (Java) beads are smaller and denser, with finer grooves, so a soft brush matters more than water. Nepal beads are larger, with deeper grooves that collect more dust; brush them a little more often.

When to look closely at a bead

  • White powder in the grooves: usually dried sweat or, in a damp place, fungus. Brush it off, wipe with a little oil and let it dry in the shade. Store it drier.
  • A new crack: stop wearing it on elastic, where it takes strain, and message us with a photo.
  • Colour change: natural beads darken with wear and oil over the years. This is normal.

Caring for the bracelet: it depends on how it's strung

This is the part most guides leave out. The cord or metal usually wears out long before a Rudraksha does.

Elastic cord

Roll the bracelet on and off over your hand instead of pulling it wide. Keep oil off the elastic, because oil can weaken it over time; if you oil the beads, take care around the cord or wipe it clean. If the bracelet starts to sit loose, the elastic is stretching and it's time to restring.

Strong thread and knotted thread

Thread absorbs oil and sweat and can fray near the knot. Let it dry fully after any contact with water. If you see fraying, restring before it breaks.

German silver

German silver is an alloy that contains no actual silver. It can darken with sweat and moisture. Wipe it dry after wearing and polish with a soft dry cloth. Keep it away from perfume.

925 silver capping

Pure 92.5% silver naturally tarnishes over time. Rub it gently with a silver polishing cloth. When you oil a silver-capped Rudraksha, oil only the bead and keep oil off the silver, then wipe the metal clean. Store silver-capped pieces in a closed pouch, away from air and moisture. GemKrishna also offers polishing for silver pieces; message us.

The selenite plate in your GemKrishna box

Every GemKrishna order comes with a free raw selenite plate. Before dispatch, every piece we make is cleansed overnight on selenite, and the plate lets you do the same at home: place your bracelet on it overnight whenever you feel it needs a refresh.

One important tip: selenite dissolves in water. Never wash it or keep it in a damp place. If it gets dusty, wipe it with a dry cloth.

Keep your lab report safe

Almost no care guide mentions this. Your GJSPC lab report has a unique number, a photo of your bead, its weight, dimensions and origin. Keep the printed report, and save a photo of it on your phone. It lets you:

  • check, years later, that a restrung bracelet still holds your original beads,
  • prove the bead is natural if you ever pass it on to family,
  • verify the report online at any time. Here's how to verify a GJSPC report.

When and how to take it off

For the bead's sake, take it off before a bath with soap or shampoo, before swimming, and before applying perfume or hand cream. Many people also take it off to sleep, which also saves the elastic. Traditional customs about when to remove a Rudraksha vary between families and regions; follow the practice of your family or priest.

Restringing: GemKrishna's lifetime promise

If the string of your GemKrishna Rudraksha bracelet ever breaks, there's no need to buy a new one. Collect all the beads and any charms, send them to us, and we restring the bracelet and send it back, with no time limit. You pay only the shipping. You can also use a restring to change your stringing, for example from elastic to silver capping, or to add a new Rudraksha; tell us when you send it.
