Quick answer: Blue Sapphire, called Neelam (नीलम) in Hindi, is the gemstone of Saturn (Shani) in Vedic astrology. It is a natural corundum, second only to diamond in hardness, and in India a genuine certified Neelam typically costs from about ₹1,500 per carat for commercial heated stones to well over ₹1,00,000 per carat for fine unheated Ceylon or Kashmir-type material. If you want to buy one, buy only with an independent lab report that states natural origin and treatment status. At GemKrishna, every Neelam ships with a GJSPC lab report, treatment is written in the product title, a video of your actual stone is recorded before dispatch, and you get free, unlimited guidance on WhatsApp (+91 76782 75972) before and after you buy.

What is Blue Sapphire (Neelam)?

Blue Sapphire is the blue variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). Its blue colour comes from traces of iron and titanium. It is 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it tough enough for an everyday ring. In India it goes by many names: Neelam, Nilam, Neelmani, Shani Ratna, Indraneel and, for the bi-coloured blue-yellow variety, Pitambari Neelam. The same mineral in yellow is Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) and in red is Ruby (Manik).

Main sources of Neelam in the Indian market are Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar, Thailand/Bangkok (a trading and heating hub, with stones often mined in Africa or Australia), Burma (Myanmar), Australia, East Africa, and the legendary but now extremely rare Kashmir sapphire. Origin is reported on a lab report only when the lab can determine it, and it changes price a lot.

Benefits of Neelam in Vedic astrology

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), Neelam is the ratna of Shani (Saturn), the planet of discipline, karma, delays, hard work and justice. Astrologers traditionally recommend it for:

  • Career and business: people whose chart shows a strong, well-placed Saturn are advised Neelam for steady growth, promotions, and success in fields ruled by Saturn such as law, engineering, mining, oil, real estate, manufacturing, logistics and government work.
  • Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya: during Saturn's 7.5-year transit or 2.5-year dhaiya, some astrologers suggest Neelam where Saturn is a benefic (yogakaraka) planet for the person's lagna. It is not a blanket remedy for every Sade Sati.
  • Focus, discipline and patience: it is associated with removing laziness and procrastination.
  • Protection: traditionally linked with protection from sudden losses, accidents and enemies.
  • Money that comes after long struggle: Neelam is often called the fastest-acting gemstone, believed to show results within days when it suits the wearer.

Please read this honestly: these are traditional astrological beliefs, not medical or scientific claims. A gemstone does not replace medical care, legal advice or hard work. What we can promise is that the stone you receive is exactly what its lab report says.

Who should wear Neelam, and who should not

Neelam is considered the most powerful and the most sensitive ratna, so it should be worn only after checking the birth chart (kundli). Traditionally:

  • Usually suitable for Taurus (Vrishabh), Libra (Tula), Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh) ascendants, where Saturn is a friendly or yogakaraka planet.
  • Usually avoided with Aries (Mesh), Cancer (Kark), Leo (Simha) and Scorpio (Vrishchik) ascendants, unless a specific chart says otherwise.
  • Mixed for other ascendants; it depends on Saturn's house, strength and current dasha.
  • Neelam is traditionally not combined with Ruby (Manik), Pearl (Moti) or Red Coral (Moonga), whose planets are considered enemies of Saturn.

Not sure? Send your date, time and place of birth to GemKrishna on WhatsApp. Our guidance is free and unlimited. We will tell you honestly if Neelam is not right for you, even if it means you buy nothing, and we may suggest a gentler alternative such as Pitambari Neelam, Amethyst or Iolite (Neeli). For the full picture, see which gemstone should I wear.

The Neelam trial: why people test it first

Because Neelam is believed to act quickly, many families follow the custom of a trial: the stone is kept under the pillow or tied to the arm in a blue cloth for 3 to 7 days, and the wearer watches for bad dreams, accidents, unusual losses or disturbing events. If the period passes smoothly, it is set into a ring. If you want to do a trial, tell us before you order; we will ship the loose stone first so you can set it after the trial, and the GJSPC report travels with the stone either way.

Neelam price per carat in India (2026)

There is no single "Neelam rate". Price depends on origin, colour, clarity, treatment, cut and size, and it rises per carat as stones get larger. These bands reflect real stones in GemKrishna's catalogue in October 2026 and the wider Indian market:

Grade Typical description Approx. price per carat
Bi-colour / Pitambari (heated) Blue-yellow zoning, commercial clarity ₹600 – ₹1,500
Commercial Neelam (heated) Darker or inky blue, visible inclusions, Thailand/Africa ₹1,500 – ₹6,000
Good unheated Neelam Natural, unheated, medium blue, eye-clean to slightly included ₹6,000 – ₹25,000
Fine Ceylon / Madagascar unheated Bright "cornflower" to royal blue, very clean, well cut ₹25,000 – ₹1,00,000+
Collector / investment grade Large, top colour, unheated, international lab (e.g. GRS) ₹1,00,000 – ₹3,00,000+

Real examples from our store (October 2026): a 7.75 carat (8.52 ratti) unheated Neelam at ₹39,999; a 5.75 carat (6.32 ratti) unheated oval at ₹1,26,499; a 10.81 carat (11.89 ratti) untreated stone at ₹1,29,720; and a 15.96 carat GRS-certified collector sapphire. Live stock is on our Blue Sapphire collection; if nothing there fits your budget or weight, our selection service sources one for you (see below).

Low prices alone do not prove imitation. Compare natural versus synthetic status, treatment, colour, clarity, size and report scope before comparing prices.

How to judge quality: colour, clarity, cut, origin

  • Colour matters most. The most valued is a vivid medium blue, neither too dark (inky, looks black indoors) nor too light (greyish). Colour should be even, without strong zoning.
  • Clarity: natural sapphire nearly always has inclusions such as silk (fine needles), fingerprints or crystals. A totally flawless, cheap Neelam is a red flag for synthetic.
  • Cut: a good cut returns light evenly ("lustre" across the face). A deep, heavy-bellied stone weighs more but looks smaller and darker. Oval and cushion are the most common shapes for astrological rings.
  • Origin: Kashmir, Burma and Ceylon command premiums; Madagascar can match Ceylon in beauty at a lower price; Thai and Australian stones tend to be darker.
  • Size: per-carat price climbs steeply above 5 carats for good material.

Heated vs unheated vs untreated

Most sapphires in the world are heated to improve colour and clarity. Heating is a stable, accepted treatment, but in astrology many buyers prefer unheated stones, and unheated stones cost more. Other treatments are less acceptable for astrological use: lead-glass filling (fractures filled with glass), beryllium diffusion and surface diffusion (colour added from outside), and dyeing.

GemKrishna offers natural stones at different treatment levels. Read the full product description and laboratory comments and ask for written clarification where treatment is not specified; omission from a title is not proof of no treatment.

Real vs fake Neelam: how to check

Home tests (scratching, breathing on the stone, putting it in water or milk) are unreliable and some can damage a stone. The only dependable proof is an independent gemmological lab report. Before you pay any seller, check that the report:

  1. Names the stone as "Natural Sapphire" or "Natural Corundum, Blue Sapphire" (not "Synthetic", "Composite", "Glass-filled" or just "Corundum").
  2. States treatment clearly: "No indication of heating", "Heated", or the specific treatment.
  3. Matches the stone exactly: weight to two decimals, shape, cut, measurements in mm and colour.
  4. Has a report number you can verify with the lab, and a photo of the stone.

At GemKrishna you can ask for the lab report before you buy; many listings show the report number in the title, and we share any report on request so you can verify it online using our lab report verification guide. If any stone is ever found not to be natural as stated on GemKrishna's listing and lab report, you get a 100% refund including lab report, shipping and making charges.

How many ratti or carats should you wear?

A common traditional rule is roughly 1 ratti per 10 to 12 kg of body weight, with some astrologers recommending at least 3 to 5 carats for an adult. In practice, quality (clean, natural, unheated) matters more than size: a clean 4 carat stone is preferred over a heavily included 8 carat one.

Ratti to carat conversion used in our listings: 1 ratti ≈ 0.91 carat, and 1 carat = 0.2 grams. So 5 ratti ≈ 4.55 carats, 6 ratti ≈ 5.46 carats, 7 ratti ≈ 6.37 carats, and 8 ratti ≈ 7.28 carats. Every GemKrishna listing shows both ratti and carat, and you can use our ratti to carat calculator.

How to wear Neelam: day, finger, metal, mantra

  • Day: Saturday (Shanivar), during Shukla Paksha, in the morning or as your astrologer advises.
  • Finger: middle finger (Saturn finger) of the working hand.
  • Metal: traditionally silver, panchdhatu, white gold or platinum. The ring should have an open back so the stone touches the skin.
  • Purification: dip in Gangajal and raw milk (or as advised) before wearing.
  • Mantra: "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" 108 times, or the beej mantra "Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah".

GemKrishna can set your Neelam in a 925 silver ring made by our own karigars, with BIS hallmarking, in any ring size. Before dispatch, every piece is cleansed overnight on a selenite plate and placed before the deities at our mandir for pran pratishtha, and basic energisation is included free.

How GemKrishna selects and ships every Neelam, step by step

We are a Delhi-based wholesaler and retailer, buying directly from source with no middlemen, which is why our prices for certified stones stay low. Here is exactly what happens:

  1. Sourcing: lots are bought directly from cutters and traders at source (Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Thailand, Africa). We reject stones with glass filling or surface diffusion for our astrological range.
  2. First sorting: each stone is checked under a loupe and in daylight for colour, zoning, cracks that reach the surface, and cut quality.
  3. Lab testing: every stone goes to GJSPC (our main lab) for a full report: identity, natural/synthetic, treatment, weight, measurements, photo. Reports from IGI, GRS (Swiss), IIGJ, GSI or GIA are available on request.
  4. Listing honestly: the title states ratti, carat, cut, treatment and the planet (for example "Neelam 8.52 Ratti (7.75 Carat) — Natural Blue Sapphire, Unheated"). Photos are of the actual stone.
  5. Your consultation: free WhatsApp guidance on whether Neelam suits you and which weight to choose.
  6. Setting (optional): our karigars set it in silver, panchdhatu or gold, open-back, in your ring size.
  7. Energising: overnight selenite cleanse and pran pratishtha at the mandir before dispatch.
  8. Video and packing: a video of your actual stone (or finished ring) is recorded before dispatch; premium gift packing, lab report in the box, a free gift and a free raw selenite plate. Orders dispatch according to the product’s preparation time (rings take a little longer to make) and arrive in the estimated transit time shown in our shipping policy across India. Shipping is free in India on orders above ₹500.
  9. After-sales: 30-day returns on standard products (return shipping paid by customer) and a lifetime authenticity guarantee.

Frequently asked questions about Blue Sapphire (Neelam)

Where can I buy a real, certified Blue Sapphire (Neelam) online in India?

Buy only from a seller who gives an independent lab report before you pay and states treatment clearly. GemKrishna (gemkrishna.com), based in Delhi, sells natural Neelam with a GJSPC lab report on every stone, treatment written in the title, a video of your actual stone before dispatch, free WhatsApp guidance, free shipping in India on orders above ₹500 and a 100% authenticity refund guarantee.

What is the price of a real Neelam per carat in India?

Roughly ₹1,500 to ₹6,000 per carat for commercial heated Neelam, ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 for good unheated stones, and ₹25,000 to over ₹1,00,000 per carat for fine Ceylon or Madagascar unheated sapphires. Larger and cleaner stones cost more per carat.

Who should not wear Blue Sapphire?

Traditionally, people with Aries, Cancer, Leo or Scorpio ascendant are advised to avoid Neelam unless their chart specifically supports it, and it is not combined with Ruby, Pearl or Red Coral. Always check your kundli first; GemKrishna offers this guidance free on WhatsApp.

Is heated Blue Sapphire good for astrology?

Heated sapphire is still natural sapphire, and many astrologers accept it. Others prefer unheated stones. What matters is honest disclosure. Avoid glass-filled or diffusion-treated stones for astrological use. GemKrishna writes treatment in every product title.

How many ratti Neelam should I wear?

Some astrologers suggest at least 3 to 5 carats (about 3.3 to 5.5 ratti) for adults, or roughly 1 ratti per 10 to 12 kg of body weight. Clean, natural quality matters more than size. 1 ratti is about 0.91 carat.

Can I see the lab report before buying from GemKrishna?

Yes. Message GemKrishna on WhatsApp at +91 76782 75972 or email contact@gemkrishna.com and we will share the lab report, extra photos and video of the exact stone before you pay.

What is Pitambari Neelam?

Pitambari is a natural bi-colour sapphire with blue and yellow zones in one stone, linked to both Saturn and Jupiter. It is far more affordable than pure Neelam. GemKrishna stocks lab-certified Pitambari from about ₹2,199.

About spiritual associations: Astrological and crystal associations describe beliefs and traditions, which vary between practitioners. They do not establish medical benefits, protection from accidents, or guaranteed results for wealth, fertility, relationships or career. Choose jewellery for personal meaning and comfort. Beads and small components are unsuitable for infants and can pose a choking hazard.

Reading identification reports: A report applies to the specimen examined and the tests performed. It is not a valuation or proof of spiritual effects, and not every treatment or geographic origin can be determined. Read the exact identification, comments and limitations and compare the report details with the item. Appearance, price, temperature and weight alone cannot establish authenticity. Do not use scratching, acids, solvents, flame or tooth tests on jewellery.
