Quick answer: Emerald, called Panna (पन्ना) or Marakata, is the gemstone of Mercury (Budh) in Vedic astrology, worn for business, communication, intelligence, studies and nervous calm. It is green beryl, softer and more included than sapphire, and many emeralds in the trade is treated with oil or resin to improve clarity. In India, a lab-certified natural Panna ranges from about ₹1,100 per carat for commercial Zambian stones to over ₹1,00,000 per carat for fine material. GemKrishna stocks certified Zambian emeralds from ₹5,499, each with a GJSPC lab report, with free WhatsApp guidance (+91 76782 75972) and free shipping in India on orders above ₹500.

What is Emerald (Panna)?

Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl, coloured by chromium and/or vanadium. It is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale but brittle because of natural inclusions, which gemmologists lovingly call the jardin (garden). Indian names include Panna, Pachai, Marakata, Harit Mani, Budh Ratna. Aquamarine and morganite are its cousins in the beryl family.

Benefits of Panna in Vedic astrology

Mercury (Budh) is the prince among planets, ruling intellect, speech, trade, mathematics, writing and the nervous system. Panna is traditionally recommended for:

  • Business and trade: traders, shop owners, accountants, CAs, brokers, marketers and anyone who negotiates.
  • Communication: speakers, teachers, lawyers, journalists, writers, content creators, sales.
  • Studies and memory: students preparing for exams, especially maths, commerce and IT.
  • Calm mind: associated with steadiness of thought and reduced restlessness.
  • Budh Mahadasha / Antardasha: strengthening a benefic Mercury.

These are traditional Jyotish beliefs, not scientific or medical claims. What we stand behind is that your emerald is exactly what its lab report says.

Who should wear Panna

  • Usually suitable: Gemini (Mithun) and Virgo (Kanya) ascendants (Mercury is the lagna lord), and Taurus (Vrishabh), Libra (Tula), Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh) where Mercury is friendly.
  • Usually avoided: Aries (Mesh), Cancer (Kark) and Scorpio (Vrishchik) ascendants unless the chart says otherwise.
  • Traditionally not combined with Red Coral (Moonga), Pearl (Moti) or Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj).
  • Many families consider Panna safe for children and students when Mercury is favourable. Ask GemKrishna on WhatsApp for free guidance with your birth details.

Zambian vs Colombian vs Brazilian vs Afghan Panna

Origin Colour and look What to know
Zambia Deep, slightly bluish green; often cleaner Best value today; most astrological Panna in India is Zambian. GemKrishna's main stock.
Colombia Warm, pure "grass" green, glowing Most prestigious, highest prices for top colour; heavily oiled stones are common.
Brazil Lighter, yellowish green Affordable, good for budget pieces.
Afghanistan (Panjshir) Vivid, can rival Colombia Limited supply.
India (Rajasthan) Often darker or cloudier Mostly commercial grade.

Oil, resin and why "untreated" emeralds are rare

Many emeralds in the trade are clarity-enhanced with colourless oil (traditionally cedar oil) or resin, which fills surface-reaching fissures and makes the stone look cleaner. This is a long-accepted practice; the key is disclosure and degree: "none", "minor", "moderate" or "significant". For astrology, some astrologers accept minor oiling. Avoid dyed green emeralds, composite (doublet/triplet) stones and heavy hard-resin filling at astrological prices.

GemKrishna lists treatment in the product title where it applies, and the GJSPC report states the finding. Anyone selling a large, clean emerald as "no oil" at a low price should be able to show it on an independent report.

How to pick a good emerald

  • Colour first: a lively, medium to medium-dark green. Too dark looks black indoors; too light is closer to green beryl.
  • Transparency over perfection: inclusions are normal; you want a stone that still glows and has no deep crack across it.
  • Cut: the step-cut "emerald cut" protects corners; ovals and cushions are popular for rings.
  • Durability: avoid stones with open fractures near the girdle or corners; they can chip.
  • Size: 3 to 6 carats is common for astrological rings for adults.

Real vs fake Panna

Common fakes are green glass, synthetic (lab-grown) emerald, dyed quartz, green onyx and doublets (thin emerald on glass). A lab report is the only reliable way to tell. It should say Natural Emerald (Beryl) and state any clarity enhancement. A perfectly clean, bright, large "Panna" at a low price is almost always synthetic or glass. At GemKrishna, report numbers are shared before purchase and every stone carries our 100% authenticity refund guarantee.

Note for budget buyers: green onyx and green aventurine are honest, low-cost green stones, but they are not Panna. We sell them under their own names.

How to wear and care for Panna

  • Day: Wednesday (Budhvar) morning, Shukla Paksha.
  • Finger: little finger (Mercury finger) of the working hand.
  • Metal: gold, silver or panchdhatu, open back.
  • Mantra: "Om Bum Budhaya Namah" 108 times, or "Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah".
  • Care: avoid hot water, ultrasonic cleaners, perfumes and harsh soaps, which can dry the oil. Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Remove before heavy work.

We set Panna in 925 silver rings with BIS hallmarking in any size; see our 925 Emerald rings.

Frequently asked questions about Emerald (Panna)

Where can I buy a real certified emerald (Panna) online in India?

Buy from a seller who shares an independent lab report before payment and discloses oil or resin treatment. GemKrishna (gemkrishna.com, Delhi) sells natural Zambian and other emeralds from ₹5,499 with a GJSPC lab report on every stone, free WhatsApp guidance, shipping across India (free above ₹500) and a 100% authenticity refund guarantee.

What is the price of Panna per carat in India?

Roughly ₹1,100 to ₹2,000 per carat for commercial natural Zambian emerald, ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for good quality, and ₹10,000 to over ₹1,00,000 for fine and top stones.

Is Zambian or Colombian emerald better for astrology?

Both are natural emerald and both are used in astrology. Colombian is more prestigious and costly; Zambian is cleaner on average and much better value, which is why most astrological Panna sold in India is Zambian.

Is oiled emerald natural?

Yes. Oiling fills surface fissures and is the most common emerald treatment; the stone is still natural emerald. What matters is that the degree is disclosed. Avoid dyed, composite or heavily resin-filled stones for astrology.

Which finger should Panna be worn on?

The little finger of the working hand, on a Wednesday morning, in gold, silver or panchdhatu with an open back.

About spiritual associations: Astrological and crystal associations describe beliefs and traditions, which vary between practitioners. They do not establish medical benefits, protection from accidents, or guaranteed results for wealth, fertility, relationships or career. Choose jewellery for personal meaning and comfort. Beads and small components are unsuitable for infants and can pose a choking hazard.

Reading identification reports: A report applies to the specimen examined and the tests performed. It is not a valuation or proof of spiritual effects, and not every treatment or geographic origin can be determined. Read the exact identification, comments and limitations and compare the report details with the item. Appearance, price, temperature and weight alone cannot establish authenticity. Do not use scratching, acids, solvents, flame or tooth tests on jewellery.
