Quick answer: Iolite, known in India as Neeli or Kaka Neeli, is the stone most astrologers suggest as the upratna (substitute) for Neelam (blue sapphire), the gemstone of Shani (Saturn). It is a natural violet-blue mineral (cordierite) that costs a small fraction of Neelam, and its easiest identification sign is that it changes colour as you turn it: violet-blue from one side, pale grey or honey-yellow from another. If your astrologer has suggested Neelam but the budget does not allow it, or you want a gentler Saturn stone, iolite is the usual choice. GemKrishna sells genuine iolite with a lab report stating its weight and identity.

What is iolite?

Iolite is the gem variety of the mineral cordierite. It forms in metamorphic rocks and is mined in India (notably Odisha), Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania and Brazil. Its hardness is about 7 to 7.5, so it is suitable for rings and pendants with sensible care. Its defining property is strong pleochroism: it shows different colours along different directions in the crystal. Sailors are said to have used thin slices of it to find the sun's direction on cloudy days, which is why it is sometimes called the "Viking compass stone".

Who should wear iolite?

In Vedic tradition, Saturn stones are associated with discipline, patience, career stability and relief during Sade Sati and Shani dasha. Iolite is commonly suggested for:

  • People with Makar (Capricorn) or Kumbh (Aquarius) rashi or lagna, where Saturn is the ruling planet, when the astrologer advises strengthening Saturn.
  • People advised Neelam who want a lower-cost, gentler start, or who cannot afford a clean, untreated Neelam of the right weight.
  • People drawn to iolite's traditional associations with intuition, clear vision and calm decision-making.

Saturn stones are taken seriously in Indian astrology. Please do not wear iolite or Neelam as a remedy without your astrologer's advice. Typical traditional guidance, which varies between astrologers, is to wear it in silver or panchdhatu on the middle finger, starting on a Saturday. These are beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes. Iolite price in India

Iolite is affordable. Loose stones are priced per carat by colour depth, clarity, cut and size: a clean, deep violet-blue stone of good size costs more per carat than a pale or included one. Astrologers often prescribe weight in ratti; use our ratti to carat calculator.

GemKrishna iolite piece Approx. price
Iolite bead bracelet ₹1,799–₹2,199
Iolite 925 silver locket ₹2,999–₹3,999
Loose iolite by carat, set in a ring or locket to order quoted by weight

For a loose iolite of the exact weight your astrologer prescribed, use our gemstone selection service: share the weight range, budget, metal and setting, pay a ₹500 advance (adjusted against the stone) and we show you real stones on video until you choose.

Real vs fake iolite

  • The turn test. Hold the stone and turn it slowly. Genuine iolite shifts clearly from violet-blue to pale grey, straw-yellow or almost colourless from another angle. Glass and most imitations stay the same colour.
  • Glass. Blue-violet glass is the commonest fake. Look for round bubbles and worn facet edges under a loupe.
  • Dyed quartz. Dye collects in cracks and at drill holes in beads.
  • Tanzanite confusion. Tanzanite is also pleochroic and more expensive. A lab separates them easily.

The turn test is a good hint, but only a lab report is proof.

Buying genuine iolite from GemKrishna

  • A lab report with every gemstone, mainly from GJSPC; IGI, GRS, IIGJ, GSI or GIA on request. You can ask for the report before buying.
  • The report records the identity (iolite / cordierite), carat weight, measurements, a photo of your stone and any treatment. Iolite is normally untreated; any treatment would be stated in the title and report.
  • A video of your actual stone before dispatch.
  • Setting in 925 silver, panchdhatu or gold to your design, open-back so the stone touches the skin; see gemstone lockets.
  • Full refund, including shipping and making, if the stone is shown not to be what we stated.
