Quick answer: Pearl, called Moti (मोती) or Mukta, is the gemstone of the Moon (Chandra) in Vedic astrology, worn for a calm mind, emotional balance, better sleep, relationships with the mother and smooth family life. Almost all pearls sold today are cultured, meaning a real oyster grew the pearl after a nucleus was placed by hand; truly natural "Basra" pearls are rare and costly. In India, a lab-certified South Sea cultured Moti for astrology typically costs around ₹400 to ₹1,000 per carat. GemKrishna sells South Sea cultured pearls with a GJSPC lab report number printed right in the product title, from about ₹2,490, with free WhatsApp guidance (+91 76782 75972) and shipping across India (free above ₹500).

What is a pearl, and what does "cultured" mean?
A pearl is an organic gem grown inside a mollusc (oyster or mussel) from layers of nacre (calcium carbonate and conchiolin). A natural pearl forms with no human help. A cultured pearl forms in the same way, inside a living oyster, after a pearl farmer inserts a small bead or tissue. Cultured pearls are real pearls; they are not imitations. Imitation or shell pearls, by contrast, are glass or shell beads coated to look like pearl.
We believe in plain honesty here: GemKrishna's pearls are mostly South Sea cultured, and this is written in the product title and confirmed on each GJSPC lab report.
Benefits of Moti in Vedic astrology
The Moon rules the mind (manas), emotions, the mother, sleep, fluids, travel over water and public popularity. Moti is traditionally advised for:
- Calm mind: overthinking, anger, mood swings, restlessness, anxiety about the future.
- Sleep: disturbed sleep and bad dreams.
- Relationships: harmony with mother, spouse and family.
- Creative and public work: artists, hospitality, nursing, dairy, liquids, import-export.
- Chandra Mahadasha, a weak or afflicted Moon, or Kemadruma-type combinations in the chart.
These are traditional Jyotish beliefs. A pearl is not a treatment for any medical or mental health condition; if you are struggling, please also speak with a doctor or counsellor.
Who should wear Moti
- Usually suitable: Cancer (Kark) ascendant, and Aries (Mesh), Leo (Simha), Scorpio (Vrishchik), Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meen) where the Moon is benefic.
- Usually avoided: Taurus (Vrishabh), Gemini (Mithun), Virgo (Kanya), Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh) ascendants unless the chart says otherwise.
- Traditionally not combined with Diamond, Emerald, Blue Sapphire, Hessonite or Cat's Eye.
- Free chart-based guidance is available from GemKrishna on WhatsApp.
Basra vs South Sea vs Freshwater vs Akoya vs Shell pearl
| Type | What it is | Look | Price and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basra (natural) | Natural pearl historically from the Persian Gulf | Small, irregular, soft glow | Rare, very expensive; needs a natural-pearl report (X-ray) |
| South Sea (cultured) | Grown in large Pinctada oysters (Australia, Indonesia, Philippines) | Large, thick nacre, white to golden, satin lustre | Best value for astrology; GemKrishna's main range |
| Akoya (cultured) | Japanese/Chinese saltwater oyster | Smaller, round, sharp lustre | Mostly jewellery |
| Freshwater (cultured) | Grown in mussels, mostly China | Varied shapes and colours, solid nacre | Affordable; some astrologers prefer saltwater |
| Shell / imitation | Coated bead | Too uniform, glassy | Not a ratna |

How to choose a good pearl
- Lustre: the most important factor. Look for a bright, deep reflection, not a chalky surface.
- Surface: fewer spots, bumps and pits is better.
- Shape: round is most valued; oval and drop are fine for rings and pendants.
- Colour: white, silvery or cream are preferred for Chandra.
- Size: for astrology, commonly 4 to 9 carats; we list exact weight on every pearl.
Real vs fake Moti
Do not use the tooth test on pearls: it can damage the surface and cannot reliably establish identity, natural versus cultured formation, or treatment. Use a suitable laboratory report and compare it with the actual pearl.
How to wear and care for Moti
- Day: Monday (Somvar) evening, ideally during Shukla Paksha or Purnima.
- Finger: little finger, or ring finger as advised.
- Metal: silver is traditional for Moti.
- Mantra: "Om Som Somaya Namah" or "Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah" 108 times.
- Care: pearl is soft (2.5 to 4.5 Mohs). Keep it away from perfume, sweat, soap, vinegar and lemon; wipe after wearing; store separately so harder stones do not scratch it.
Our karigars set Moti in 925 silver rings and pendants with BIS hallmarking.

Frequently asked questions about Pearl (Moti)
Where can I buy a real certified Moti (pearl) online in India?
Buy from a seller that tells you clearly whether the pearl is natural or cultured and gives a lab report. GemKrishna (gemkrishna.com, Delhi) sells South Sea cultured pearls with the GJSPC report number in each product title, from about ₹2,490, with free WhatsApp guidance and shipping across India (free above ₹500).
Is a cultured pearl real?
Yes. A cultured pearl is grown by a living oyster; only the start is assisted by a farmer. It is different from an imitation or shell pearl, which is a coated bead.
Which pearl is best for astrology?
Natural Basra pearl is the classical choice but is rare and expensive. Some astrologers today accept saltwater South Sea cultured pearl with good lustre and a lab report, which is far more affordable.
What is the price of Moti per carat?
South Sea cultured pearls for astrology are roughly ₹400 to ₹1,000 per carat; freshwater pearls are much cheaper; natural Basra pearls cost several thousand rupees per carat or more.
On which day and finger should Moti be worn?
Traditionally on a Monday evening in Shukla Paksha, on the little finger (or ring finger as advised), set in silver.

About spiritual associations: Astrological and crystal associations describe beliefs and traditions, which vary between practitioners. They do not establish medical benefits, protection from accidents, or guaranteed results for wealth, fertility, relationships or career. Choose jewellery for personal meaning and comfort. Beads and small components are unsuitable for infants and can pose a choking hazard.
Reading identification reports: A report applies to the specimen examined and the tests performed. It is not a valuation or proof of spiritual effects, and not every treatment or geographic origin can be determined. Read the exact identification, comments and limitations and compare the report details with the item. Appearance, price, temperature and weight alone cannot establish authenticity. Do not use scratching, acids, solvents, flame or tooth tests on jewellery.
