Quick answer: for a Diwali silver gift, choose 925 sterling silver for jewellery (it is hard enough to wear daily) and 925 or 999 silver for coins. Compare pieces by weight in grams, not by photo. A fair price is roughly silver weight × the day's rate for that purity + a making charge, and making charges are higher for fine handwork. Always ask for a BIS hallmark with a 6-character HUID, which you can check in the BIS CARE app. At GemKrishna, most SILVY pieces are already hallmarked, and you can add hallmarking to any other piece for ₹249.

Why silver at Diwali?

Silver (chandi) is linked in Indian tradition with the Moon, purity and Lakshmi. Buying metal on Dhanteras (Friday, 6 November 2026) is considered auspicious, and silver coins, idols and jewellery are given at Diwali (Sunday, 8 November) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday, 10 November). Silver also has a practical advantage over most gifts: it keeps its metal value, and a good piece can be polished back to new for decades.

925 vs 999 silver: which for a gift?

  • 999 (fine silver) is 99.9% silver. It is soft and scratches easily, so it is used for coins, bars and some idols.
  • 925 (sterling silver) is 92.5% silver with 7.5% other metal (usually copper) for strength. It is the right choice for jewellery you will wear: chains, payal, bracelets, rings and pendants.
  • Anything sold as "German silver", "silver-plated" or "oxidised" may contain little or no silver. See our guide 925 silver vs German silver vs silver-plated vs panchdhatu.

How silver jewellery is priced (so you can spot overpricing)

A silver jewellery price has two parts:

  1. Metal value = net silver weight (grams) × the day's silver rate for that purity.
  2. Making charge: the labour and design. This can be charged per gram or as a fixed amount. Fine handwork such as filigree, ghungroo payal or detailed idols costs more to make than a simple chain.

Illustration only: if 925 silver is ₹R per gram today and a pendant weighs 8 g with a making charge of ₹M per gram, the fair price is about 8 × (R + M). Compare two shops using the same formula. If one quotes a lot more for the same grams and similar work, ask why.

At GemKrishna, our silver products state the silver weight, and SILVY custom pieces are priced as the day's silver rate plus making charges. Our silver god pendants carry reasonable making charges, and product pages show actual, unedited photos.

Big look, light weight: hollow and electroformed silver

Some silver jhumkas, kadas and idols look large but weigh very little. That is usually because they are hollow, often made by electroforming, a process that grows a thin, strong shell of pure silver over a mould. Electroformed pieces are real silver and can be excellent value, because you get a big design without paying for solid metal. You should know what you are buying, though: check the stated net weight, ask whether the piece is hollow, and ask whether it has any wax or resin filling. Read our full guides: what is electroformed jewellery and electroformed 925 silver jewellery.

How to check the hallmark and HUID

  1. Look for the BIS logo, the purity grade and a 6-character alphanumeric HUID stamped on the piece.
  2. Open the BIS CARE app, choose "Verify HUID", and enter the code. It shows the purity, article type, the jeweller and the hallmarking centre.
  3. Match the article type in the app with what you bought (a pendant should not show up as a ring).

As of 2026, hallmarking silver in India is still voluntary, but when a piece is hallmarked the HUID is required. That is why we offer hallmarking on request: it gives the person receiving the gift independent proof of purity. Read our silver hallmark and HUID guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is silver a good Diwali gift?

Yes. Silver is considered auspicious at Dhanteras and Diwali, keeps its metal value and can be polished back to new. 925 silver jewellery, god pendants and silver coins are the most common choices.

Should I buy 925 or 999 silver as a gift?

999 for coins and bars, 925 for jewellery that will be worn. 925 is stronger because it contains 7.5% other metal.

How do I check if silver is real?

Look for a BIS hallmark with a 6-character HUID and verify it in the BIS CARE app. A magnet test only rules out some fakes and is not proof of purity.

Why is a big silver piece so light?

It is probably hollow or electroformed. That is fine if the seller states the net silver weight and you pay for that weight, not for the size.

Can I get silver jewellery hallmarked at GemKrishna?

Yes. Add "Silver Hallmark (Tonch)" at checkout for ₹249. It is a full BIS hallmark with HUID and adds up to 2 days.
