Quick answer: 925 silver darkens because the silver reacts with sulphur in the air, sweat, perfume and cosmetics. It is surface tarnish, not damage. For light tarnish, rub gently with a silver polishing cloth. For heavier tarnish on plain silver, wash in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse and dry completely. Avoid toothpaste, baking-soda scrubs, harsh dips and anything abrasive on plated, oxidised or gemstone-set pieces. Store each piece in its own airtight pouch, away from moisture. For deep cleaning, re-plating or resizing, GemKrishna offers polishing, re-plating and resizing as after-sales services.

Why does silver turn black?

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds to form a thin layer of silver sulphide, first yellowish, then brown, then black. In India the usual causes are:

  • Humidity, especially in the monsoon and in coastal cities.
  • Sweat, which is slightly acidic and salty.
  • Perfume, deodorant, hairspray and body lotion.
  • Rubber bands, some cardboard boxes and wool, which give off sulphur.
  • Kitchen gas, onion and egg fumes, and pollution.
  • Kumkum, sindoor and haldi on payal, toe rings and puja items.

Silver you wear every day often stays brighter than silver kept in a drawer, because gentle rubbing against skin and cloth polishes it.

Safe cleaning, from gentlest to strongest

1. Polishing cloth (all pieces)

A treated silver cloth removes light tarnish without scratching. Rub along the design, not in circles. This is safe for nearly everything, including plated pieces (use light pressure) and pieces with stones.

2. Mild soap and water (plain silver, no stones)

Mix a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid in lukewarm water. Soak plain silver for a few minutes, clean the details with a soft baby toothbrush, rinse in clean water, and dry thoroughly with a soft cotton cloth. Leave it in air for an hour before storing.

3. Professional cleaning (heavy tarnish, detailed or valuable pieces)

Heavily blackened payal, detailed god pendants, idols and filigree are best cleaned professionally, because home scrubbing wears down fine detail. Send them to us for polishing.

What not to use

  • Toothpaste and baking-soda scrubs. They are abrasive and leave micro-scratches. They also strip plating and oxidised finishes.
  • Harsh silver dips on pieces with stones, pearls, Rudraksha or plating.
  • Bleach, chlorine, acids, lemon or vinegar scrubs.
  • Steel wool or kitchen scrubbers.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners for pieces with porous or treated stones, pearls, turquoise, opal or emerald.

Special cases

Gold-plated or rose-gold-plated silver

Plating is a thin layer. Clean only with a soft dry cloth, keep it away from perfume and sweat, and do not polish hard. Plating wears gradually with use. When the silver starts to show through, it can be re-plated. See gold-plated silver: is it worth it?

Rhodium-plated silver

Rhodium gives a bright white finish and slows tarnish. Wipe with a soft cloth only. It can also be re-plated when it wears.

Oxidised (black antique) silver

The dark recesses are intentional. Do not dip or scrub it. Wipe only the raised surfaces with a cloth to keep the contrast.

Silver with gemstones

Clean around stones with a dry soft brush. Never soak pearls, coral, turquoise, lapis, opal or emerald. Check claws and bezels every few months; a loose stone is far easier to fix early.

Electroformed (hollow) silver

Clean like plain silver, but dry it carefully, hole-down, so no water stays inside. Store it where nothing can press on it. See electroformed silver jewellery.

Rudraksha in silver

Never dip it. Wipe the silver dry and oil the bead lightly. See Rudraksha in 925 silver.

Everyday habits that keep silver bright

  • Last on, first off: put silver on after perfume and make-up; take it off before bathing, swimming, the gym, cooking with spices and sleeping.
  • Wipe after wearing with a dry cotton cloth to remove sweat.
  • Store separately in zip pouches or the box it came in, with an anti-tarnish strip or a small silica gel pack, especially in the monsoon.
  • Keep chains closed and flat so they do not tangle.
  • Wear it. Silver that is worn regularly tarnishes less.

Payal and toe rings

Anklets meet the most dust, water and sweat. Rinse them in plain water after a day out, dry them, and give them a soap-and-water clean every few weeks. Check the hooks and links regularly; the S-hook is the part that loosens first. Read the silver payal and anklet guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 925 silver turn black?

Silver reacts with sulphur from air, sweat, perfume and cosmetics, forming a dark silver sulphide layer. It is surface tarnish and can be polished off.

Can I clean silver with toothpaste?

Avoid it. Toothpaste is abrasive, scratches silver and strips plating and oxidised finishes. Use a silver polishing cloth or mild soap and water instead.

How do I stop silver from tarnishing?

Put it on after perfume, remove it before bathing, wipe it after wearing, and store it in an airtight pouch with an anti-tarnish strip or silica gel.

Can gold-plated silver be re-plated?

Yes. When plating wears, it can be re-plated. GemKrishna offers re-plating as an after-sales service.

Is it safe to wear silver in the shower?

It will not harm the silver itself, but soap and hard water speed up tarnish and dull the finish. Plated and gemstone pieces should never be worn in the shower.
