Quick answer: Rudraksha can be worn on thread (traditional and free), in German silver (a silver-coloured alloy with no silver), with 925 silver capping (small silver caps on each bead, strung on thread) or on 925 silver wire with capping (the strongest and most premium). Silver protects the bead's holes from wear, adds strength and looks finished. In GemKrishna's Custom Rudraksha Bracelet Builder, German silver is ₹999, small 925 silver capping with thread is ₹2,000 for the whole bracelet, and big capping is ₹300 per bead. Silver wire and full silver work are priced after the order at the day's silver rate. Whatever you choose, insist that the bead itself is lab and X-ray tested before it is capped.
Thread, German silver, silver capping or silver wire?
| Option | What it is | Strength | Look | Cost at GemKrishna (bracelet) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thread / knotted thread | Strong cotton or silk thread, with knots between beads if chosen | Good; restring every year or two | Traditional | Free |
| Elastic or GemSnap magnetic lock | High-grade elastic, or a stainless-steel core with a magnetic lock | Good | Modern | Free |
| German silver fittings / wire | Copper, nickel and zinc alloy; no silver | Very good | Silver look | ₹999 |
| 925 silver capping with thread (small caps) | Small sterling silver caps over each bead's holes | Very good; protects holes | Finished, classic | ₹2,000 for the bracelet |
| 925 silver capping with thread (big caps) | Larger decorative caps | Very good | Premium | ₹300 per bead |
| 925 silver wire with capping | Beads capped and linked on solid silver wire | Strongest | Most premium | Priced by silver weight after the order |
"Silver" at GemKrishna always means 925 sterling silver (92.5% silver). German silver is a different, much cheaper alloy, and we always name it separately. Read 925 silver vs German silver.
Why wear Rudraksha in silver?
- Protection. Thread rubs the inside of a bead's hole over the years. A cap covers the hole edges and spreads the load.
- Strength. Silver wire does not wear through like thread, so a heavy kantha or a large Gauri Shankar is safer.
- Presentation. Silver capping makes a single bead into a finished pendant and makes a bracelet look like jewellery.
- Tradition. Many Shiva bhakts wear Rudraksha in silver or gold, and silver is traditionally associated with the Moon and a calm mind. Practices vary; many sadhus wear Rudraksha only on thread. Both are respected.
The one thing to insist on: test the bead before it is capped
Capping covers the top and bottom of a bead, exactly where joins, glue or carved extra lines are easiest to see. A fake Gauri Shankar (two beads glued together) or a 5 Mukhi with extra carved lines can hide under a cap. That is why:
- GemKrishna Rudraksha get a GJSPC lab report from ₹1,000 (₹150 per bead below) and an X-ray report above ₹1,999. The X-ray shows the internal seed chambers, which must match the number of Mukhi lines.
- Each bead is photographed, and for custom pieces we show you the bead before it is capped or strung, then share a photo of the finished piece before dispatch.
- Premium beads get a premium large-format GJSPC report, and every report states the bead's origin (Nepal, Indonesia or India).

Making your own Rudraksha piece in silver
Bracelet
In the Custom Rudraksha Bracelet Builder, choose the main beads by Mukhi, origin and size, the base beads (free), then the stringing: German silver, small silver capping, big silver capping per bead, or silver wire with capping. You can add a 925 silver S-kunda lock. Bracelets are usually made in 1–2 days; silver wire work may take a little longer.
Kantha
In the Custom Rudraksha Kantha Builder, a Siddh Mala or Indra Mala can be made as dhaga with a 1 Mukhi basket, silver capping in thread, silver capping in wire, or all-silver. Kanthas take up to about a week. A full kantha in silver wire is a significant piece of silver, so we confirm the weight and the day's rate with you before making it.
Pendant
Any single bead, such as a 1 Mukhi, a Gauri Shankar, a Ganesh Rudraksha or a large 11 or 14 Mukhi, can be capped as a pendant in 925 silver, with or without a deity motif. Message us with the bead you want, or choose it on our Buy Rudraksha page, and we will quote the silver work.
Caring for Rudraksha in silver
- Oil the bead, not the silver. A drop of sandalwood or mustard oil on the bead every few weeks keeps it from drying. Wipe excess oil off the silver.
- Keep it dry. Remove it before bathing with soap or swimming. Water and soap tarnish silver and dry out the bead.
- Clean silver with a dry cloth. Never dip a capped Rudraksha in silver-cleaning liquid. It will soak into the bead.
- Restringing: thread-strung capped pieces should be checked and restrung when the thread looks worn. GemKrishna restrings bracelets and malas free for life; you pay shipping. Full care guide: how to care for a Rudraksha bracelet.
Frequently asked questions
Can Rudraksha be worn in silver?
Yes. Many devotees wear Rudraksha in silver or gold; others prefer thread. Silver capping protects the bead's holes and adds strength. Follow your own tradition or guru.
What is the difference between German silver and silver capping?
German silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc and contains no silver. 925 silver capping is real sterling silver. At GemKrishna, German silver stringing is ₹999 and small 925 silver capping is ₹2,000 for a bracelet.
How much does silver capping on a Rudraksha bracelet cost?
In GemKrishna's builder: ₹2,000 for small 925 capping on the whole bracelet, or ₹300 per bead for big capping. Silver wire with capping is priced by silver weight after the order.
Can a fake Rudraksha be hidden under capping?
Yes. Glued joints and carved lines are often near the holes. Always buy capped Rudraksha with a lab and X-ray report done on the bead itself.
Should I oil a Rudraksha in silver?
Oil the bead lightly every few weeks and wipe the silver dry. Do not soak it.
