Quick answer: Ruby, called Manik (माणिक) or Manikya, is the gemstone of the Sun (Surya) in Vedic astrology, worn for confidence, leadership, traditional symbolism relating to the father-figure, government favour and recognition. It is red corundum, the sister of sapphire. The biggest trap in India is glass-filled (lead-glass) ruby, sold cheaply as "natural Manik". A genuine, untreated or heated-only ruby with an independent lab report usually costs from several thousand rupees per carat for commercial African stones to lakhs per carat for fine unheated Burmese or Ceylon rubies. GemKrishna sells rubies with a GJSPC lab report on every stone and states heating in the title. WhatsApp +91 76782 75972 for free guidance.

What is Ruby (Manik)?
Ruby is corundum coloured red by chromium. It is 9 on the Mohs scale, and its red fluorescence under sunlight gives fine rubies their famous "glow". Indian names include Manik, Manikya, Padmaraga, Lal, Ravi Ratna, Surya Mani. Pink corundum is called pink sapphire; the line between "pink sapphire" and "ruby" depends on colour saturation and is evaluated according to the laboratory’s terminology.
Benefits of Manik in Vedic astrology
The Sun is the king of the navagraha, ruling the self, authority, the father, government, vitality and fame. Manik is traditionally advised for:
- Confidence and willpower: overcoming hesitation, stage fear, low self-esteem.
- Leadership: managers, founders, politicians, administrators, doctors, defence and police.
- Government work: civil services aspirants, government jobs and favours from authority.
- Name and recognition: public life and reputation.
- Surya Mahadasha or a weak but benefic Sun in the chart.
These are traditional Jyotish beliefs, not scientific or medical claims. Our promise is about the stone: natural, as stated, with a lab report.
Who should wear Manik
- Usually suitable: Leo (Simha) ascendant, and Aries (Mesh), Cancer (Kark), Scorpio (Vrishchik), Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meen) where the Sun is friendly.
- Usually avoided: Taurus (Vrishabh), Libra (Tula), Capricorn (Makar) and Aquarius (Kumbh) ascendants unless the chart says otherwise.
- Traditionally never combined with Blue Sapphire (Neelam), Hessonite (Gomed) or Cat's Eye (Lehsunia), and usually not with Diamond.
- Get your chart checked first; GemKrishna offers free, unlimited WhatsApp guidance.
Burma vs Mozambique vs Madagascar vs Ceylon vs Thai ruby
| Origin | Look | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Burma (Myanmar) | "Pigeon blood" vivid red, strong glow | The benchmark; rare and very expensive when unheated. |
| Mozambique | Vivid red, often clean | Today's main source of fine ruby; good value for quality. |
| Madagascar | Red to pinkish or purplish red | Good unheated material available at reasonable prices. |
| Sri Lanka (Ceylon) | Lighter, bright pinkish red, high lustre | Prized in Jyotish; unheated Ceylon is rare. |
| Thailand / Cambodia | Darker, brownish or garnet-like red | Mostly heated, more affordable. |
| India (Odisha, Karnataka) | Opaque to translucent | "New Burma" and opaque Indian ruby are low-cost; check reports. |
The glass-filled ruby problem
Since the mid-2000s the market has been flooded with lead-glass filled ruby, also called composite ruby: low-grade, cracked corundum soaked with lead glass so it looks clear and red. It can contain more glass than ruby, it is damaged by heat, acids and even lemon juice, and its value is a tiny fraction of real ruby. It is frequently sold as "natural Manik, certified" with a weak certificate that only says "Corundum".
For astrological use, avoid it completely. A proper report will say "Natural Ruby" and state "No indication of heating" or "Heated"; anything that says "Composite", "Lead glass filled" or "Clarity enhanced with glass" is not what an astrologer means by Manik. GemKrishna does not sell glass-filled ruby as Manik.
Ruby price per carat in India (2026)
| Grade | Description | Approx. per carat |
|---|---|---|
| Glass-filled / composite | Not true Manik | ₹100 – ₹1,000 (avoid) |
| Commercial heated (Thai/African) | Darker, included | ₹2,000 – ₹8,000 |
| Good unheated African/Madagascar | Natural colour, some inclusions | ₹8,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Fine unheated Mozambique/Ceylon | Bright red, clean, good cut | ₹40,000 – ₹2,50,000 |
| Top unheated Burma | Pigeon blood, international lab | ₹2,50,000 per carat and far above |
For reference, GemKrishna currently lists a 2.46 carat (2.70 ratti) natural unheated Ceylon ruby at ₹5,99,999, and has a batch of GJSPC-certified unheated Madagascar and African rubies of about 2.4 to 5.7 carats being listed; WhatsApp us for current stock and prices. See the Ruby collection.
Real vs fake ruby: how to check
- Ask for an independent lab report before payment. It must say "Natural Ruby" and state heating clearly.
- Reject reports that say only "Corundum" without "natural", or that mention "composite", "glass" or "filled".
- Match weight to two decimals, shape and measurements.
- Synthetic and natural rubies can both contain inclusions. Price and a simple loupe check cannot reliably distinguish all examples; laboratory testing is preferable.
- Garnet, red spinel, red glass and dyed quartz are common look-alikes. Spinel is a fine gem in its own right, but it is not Manik.
Every GemKrishna ruby carries our 100% authenticity refund guarantee: if it is not natural as stated in our listing and lab report, you get everything back, including the lab report, shipping and making charges.
How to wear Manik
- Day: Sunday (Ravivar) morning around sunrise, Shukla Paksha.
- Finger: ring finger of the working hand.
- Metal: traditionally gold or copper; silver and panchdhatu widely used. Open back.
- Weight: often 2.5 to 5 carats for adults; a clean natural stone matters more than size.
- Mantra: "Om Suryaya Namah" or "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" 108 times; many offer water to the Sun (Surya arghya) on the day.

Frequently asked questions about Ruby (Manik)
Where can I buy a real certified ruby (Manik) online in India?
Buy only with an independent report stating "Natural Ruby" and its heating status. GemKrishna (gemkrishna.com, Delhi) sells natural rubies with a GJSPC report on every stone, does not sell glass-filled ruby as Manik, gives free WhatsApp guidance, shipping across India (free above ₹500) and a 100% authenticity refund guarantee.
How do I know if my ruby is glass-filled?
Under magnification, glass-filled ruby shows blue or orange flashes in cracks and trapped gas bubbles. The reliable proof is a lab report; one that says "composite", "lead glass filled" or only "corundum" is not natural Manik for astrology.
What is the price of real Manik per carat?
About ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 per carat for commercial heated ruby, ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 for good unheated African or Madagascar stones, and ₹40,000 to several lakhs per carat for fine unheated Mozambique, Ceylon or Burma ruby.
Can ruby and blue sapphire be worn together?
Traditionally no. The Sun and Saturn are considered enemies in Jyotish, so Manik and Neelam are not worn together. Hessonite and Cat's Eye are also avoided with ruby.
Which finger is ruby worn on?
The ring finger of the working hand, on a Sunday morning near sunrise, set in gold, copper, silver or panchdhatu with an open back.

About spiritual associations: Astrological and crystal associations describe beliefs and traditions, which vary between practitioners. They do not establish medical benefits, protection from accidents, or guaranteed results for wealth, fertility, relationships or career. Choose jewellery for personal meaning and comfort. Beads and small components are unsuitable for infants and can pose a choking hazard.
Reading identification reports: A report applies to the specimen examined and the tests performed. It is not a valuation or proof of spiritual effects, and not every treatment or geographic origin can be determined. Read the exact identification, comments and limitations and compare the report details with the item. Appearance, price, temperature and weight alone cannot establish authenticity. Do not use scratching, acids, solvents, flame or tooth tests on jewellery.
