Almost every rudraksha seller online says their beads are "lab certified". Very few explain what the lab actually checked, or what you should look for when the report arrives. This post explains what an X-ray report on a rudraksha shows, why it matters, and how GemKrishna tests every bead we sell.

The short version

At GemKrishna, every rudraksha bead ships with two reports: a lab report and an X-ray report, both issued by GJSPC. This applies to every bead, whatever its price. You can ask to see both reports before you buy. Every bead is also individually photographed, so you see the actual bead you're buying.

Why rudraksha needs an X-ray, not just a look

A rudraksha's mukhis (faces) are the natural lines that run from top to bottom on its surface. The number of mukhis is what makes a bead a 5 mukhi, a 7 mukhi, a 14 mukhi and so on, and higher and rarer mukhis cost far more.

That price difference is exactly why the surface alone can't be trusted. Some of the ways beads are faked or altered include:

  • Carved extra lines: an extra mukhi is cut into a common bead to make it look like a rarer one.
  • Joined beads: two beads, or pieces of beads, are glued together to imitate a naturally joined bead such as Gauri Shankar.
  • Fillings and inserts: a bead is filled, or has a shape inserted, to add weight or an unusual feature.
  • Look-alike seeds: seeds from other trees are sold as rudraksha.

Most of these are hard or impossible to spot with the naked eye, especially in a product photo. An X-ray looks inside the bead, where they are much harder to hide.

What an X-ray shows inside a rudraksha

Inside a genuine rudraksha, the bead is divided into internal compartments, and these compartments correspond to the mukhis on the outside. A natural 5 mukhi bead has 5 lines on the surface and a matching internal structure. A carved extra line on the surface has no matching compartment inside, and that mismatch is what the X-ray reveals.

The X-ray also shows whether the bead is one solid natural piece, or whether there is a join, a filling or a foreign object inside. For naturally joined beads, like Gauri Shankar, it helps show whether the joint is natural growth or glue.

One honest note: not every compartment always holds a fully developed seed. That's natural. What matters is that the internal structure matches the mukhis on the outside.

How to read your rudraksha report

When your bead arrives, check these points on the report against the bead in your hand:

  1. The issuing lab: the report should clearly name the lab that issued it. Ours are from GJSPC.
  2. The report number: every report has its own number, which ties it to one specific bead.
  3. The photograph: the report includes a photo of the bead. Compare it with your bead: the shape, colour and surface pattern should match.
  4. Mukhi count: the report states the number of mukhis. Count the lines on your bead yourself and make sure they match.
  5. Weight and size: the stated weight and dimensions should match your bead. A kitchen scale that measures to 0.1 g is enough for a rough check.
  6. The X-ray image: look for internal compartments that correspond to the mukhis, and nothing that looks like a join, filling or foreign object.
  7. The conclusion: the report should clearly state whether the bead is natural.

If anything on a report doesn't match the bead you received, from us or from anyone else, ask the seller about it before you wear it.

How GemKrishna tests every bead

Two reports, every bead, every price

Many sellers only test their expensive beads, or issue one certificate for a whole mala. At GemKrishna, every single rudraksha bead gets both a lab report and an X-ray report from GJSPC, whether it's an affordable everyday bead or a rare higher mukhi.

Why GJSPC

We use GJSPC for our rudraksha testing because we regard it as the leading rudraksha lab in the Indian trade, and its owner is a rudraksha specialist. Rudraksha testing needs specific expertise, and we would rather use a lab that specialises in it.

You can see the reports before you buy

Message us on WhatsApp or email us and we'll share the reports for the bead you're interested in before you place your order.

Every bead is photographed

We photograph each rudraksha bead individually, so the bead in the photo is the bead you receive.

Nepal and Indonesian rudraksha

We stock both Nepal and Indonesian rudraksha, and we tell you which one you're buying. Both are natural rudraksha; they differ in size, appearance and price.

Frequently asked questions

Does every GemKrishna rudraksha come with an X-ray report?

Yes. Every rudraksha bead ships with both a lab report and an X-ray report from GJSPC, regardless of price.

What does an X-ray report prove about a rudraksha?

It shows the bead's internal structure. A genuine bead's internal compartments correspond to its surface mukhis, and the X-ray can reveal carved extra lines, joins, fillings or inserted objects.

Can a rudraksha be natural if not every compartment has a seed?

Yes. Not every compartment always holds a fully developed seed. The important thing is that the internal structure matches the mukhis on the surface.

Can I see the reports before I buy?

Yes. Ask us on WhatsApp or by email and we'll share them before you order.

Do you sell Nepal or Indonesian rudraksha?

Both. Each product states which it is.

Is a mala certified as a whole, or bead by bead?

At GemKrishna, bead by bead. Every rudraksha bead has its own lab report and X-ray report.

Can you make a rudraksha bracelet or mala to my design?

Yes. We make custom bracelets and jaap malas on request, and you can also design a mala using our custom jaap mala builder.
