Quick answer: Traditionally, Rudraksha is meant to be worn touching the skin, so a pendant (for a single important bead) or a bracelet (for daily wear) is the usual choice. A jaap mala is for chanting and meditation. A keychain keeps a bead with you when you can't or don't want to wear one, and makes a meaningful gift, but it is a reminder and a blessing to carry rather than a substitute for wearing it. Whichever you choose, the bead itself should be genuine and independently tested.

Keychain vs bracelet vs pendant vs mala at a glance

Best for Typical mukhi Worn on skin?
Pendant One important bead advised for you; larger Nepal beads; rare mukhis Any single mukhi, especially 1, 7, 11, 13, 14 and above, Gauri Shankar Yes, on the chest
Bracelet Everyday wear; combining Rudraksha with crystals 5 Mukhi most often; also 2, 4, 6, 7 Yes, on the wrist
Jaap mala Chanting, meditation, daily puja 5 Mukhi (108 + 1 beads) is traditional; 2 Mukhi combinations too Used in the hand; can also be worn
Keychain Carrying a blessing in your car, bag or on your keys; gifts; people whose work doesn't allow jewellery 4, 5 or 6 Mukhi No

Rudraksha pendant

A pendant is the traditional way to wear a single bead that has been advised for you, especially a larger Nepal bead or a rare mukhi. The bead rests near the heart. It can be capped in 925 silver, german silver or other metals, hung on a chain or thread, or combined with a gemstone cap. Because pendants often use your most valuable bead, this is where an individual lab report and X-ray report matter most.

Examples from our store: 7 Mukhi Nepali Rudraksha with capping and chain, 925 silver openable Rudraksha and gemstone cap pendant, Shivling Trishul Rudraksha 925 silver pendant and the Hanuman Ji Rudraksha silver locket. Any loose bead from our Rudraksha collection can also be made into a pendant for you.

Rudraksha bracelet

A bracelet is the easiest way to wear Rudraksha every day. The 5 Mukhi bracelet is the most popular, and many people combine Rudraksha with crystals whose purposes complement it: Karungali (ebony) and Black Tourmaline for protection, Tiger Eye for confidence, Clear Quartz for clarity, or Navratan for balancing all nine planets.

You can choose an elastic bracelet, a metal-wire bracelet, or our Gem Snap magnetic-lock bracelets, strung on a strong stainless steel core looped twice with a magnetic lock for easy on and off.

Examples: 5 Mukhi Rudraksh & Karungali, 5 Mukhi Rudraksh & Tiger Eye, Black Tourmaline Rudraksha Nazar, Navratan and Rudraksha, Aura Clear Quartz & 5 Mukhi Rudraksha Gem Snap and 5 Mukhi Rudraksha with golden beads and magnetic lock. Rudraksha jaap mala

A jaap mala is used to count mantras during chanting and meditation. The traditional mala has 108 beads plus one guru bead (sumeru). 5 Mukhi malas are the classic choice; Rudraksha is also combined with gemstones such as pearl, lapis lazuli, red coral, hessonite garnet, cat's eye or clear quartz, sometimes with 925 silver capping. Rudraksha keychain: does it work?

This is one of the most searched Rudraksha questions. Honestly: tradition says Rudraksha gives its benefit when it is worn in contact with the skin, so a keychain is not a replacement for a pendant or bracelet. What a keychain does well is keep a genuine bead with you at all times, in your car, bag or on your house keys, as a blessing and a daily reminder. It suits people who can't wear jewellery at work, and it is a thoughtful, affordable gift.

4, 5 and 6 Mukhi are the common choices for keychains, traditionally linked with wisdom, peace and calm. See our Rudraksha Keychain 4/5/6 Mukhi.

How GemKrishna makes your Rudraksha piece, step by step

Whether you order a keychain or a rare-mukhi pendant, here is exactly what happens after you place your order:

  1. You tell us what you need. Pick a design on the site or message us on WhatsApp. Guidance is free and unlimited. We recommend by your purpose, not by what we want to sell.
  2. We pick the best Rudraksha for you. We select the beads that fit your mukhi, size and budget from our Nepal and Indonesian (Java) Rudraksha. If what you need is not listed, ask us and we will source it.
  3. We verify it. The beads are checked before they go any further.
  4. Independent lab report and X-ray. Rudraksha is tested by GJSPC Laboratory, Delhi, which issues a lab report and an X-ray report under its own report number, verifiable on gjspc.in. On loose beads, the report number is in the product title and you can ask to see it before you pay.
  5. Real photos. We photograph the actual bead or piece, with size and weight stated.
  6. Made by hand, to order. Around 90% of our orders are made specially for the customer after the order comes in. Our karigars hand-pick the beads, size, arrangement, elastic or wire and metal fittings for your piece.
  7. Cleansed and energised. Every piece is cleansed overnight on a selenite plate and placed before the deities at our mandir for pran pratishtha. Basic energisation is free; for bracelets you can choose from a few puja and energisation options before ordering.
  8. Packed with its papers. Your order ships with its lab report and X-ray report, plus a free raw selenite plate so you can cleanse and recharge it at home.
  9. Shipped across India from Delhi.
  10. Looked after afterwards. 30-day returns on standard products (return shipping is paid by the customer; custom-made pieces are not eligible). For bracelets, a wrong wrist size is remade free, a broken strand or loose beads are repaired free (you pay shipping), and we will restring your GemKrishna bracelet for life if you send the beads back.

How to care for your Rudraksha

  • Keep it away from soap, perfume, chemicals and chlorinated water. Many people remove it before bathing with soap or swimming.
  • If it gets dirty, clean it gently with a soft brush and plain water, and let it dry fully.
  • Every few months, a light coat of oil (sandalwood or plain mustard/coconut oil is traditional) keeps the bead from drying out.
  • Cleanse and recharge it on the selenite plate that comes with your order.
  • A slow darkening of colour over months of wear is natural.
