In short: A Rudraksha bracelet is a bracelet of Rudraksha beads, the sacred seeds linked with Lord Shiva, worn on the wrist every day. Men and women can both wear one. The most commonly worn is 5 Mukhi (Panchmukhi), traditionally worn for peace of mind; other mukhis are chosen for prosperity, courage, learning, marriage and more. It is traditionally worn on the right wrist and first put on on a Monday, with "Om Namah Shivaya". A real Rudraksha is best confirmed by an X-ray lab report for the bead itself, not by the water test. At GemKrishna (gemkrishna.com, Delhi) you can build your own in the Custom Rudraksha Bracelet Builder: a complete bracelet costs ₹999, one Rudraksha of your choice with its own GJSPC lab report and X-ray costs from ₹399, and you can choose from 1 to 21 Mukhi from Nepal and Indonesia, Indian-origin beads, Gauri Shankar, Garbh Gauri, Ganesh and Trijuti.
The benefits in this guide are the traditional beliefs about Rudraksha as described in Rudraksha texts. Modern scientific research on Rudraksha is limited, so please treat them as matters of faith and tradition, not medical, financial or guaranteed results.
What is a Rudraksha bracelet?
Rudraksha is the dried seed of the Rudraksha tree (Elaeocarpus ganitrus), which grows mainly in Nepal, Indonesia and parts of India. The name joins "Rudra" (Lord Shiva) and "aksha" (eyes or tears); tradition holds that the first Rudraksha trees grew from Lord Shiva's tears.
Each bead has natural lines running from top to bottom called mukhi (faces). A bead with five lines is a 5 Mukhi; one with eleven lines is an 11 Mukhi. Each mukhi is traditionally linked with a deity and a purpose.
A Rudraksha bracelet usually has two parts:
- Base beads: smaller, common Rudraksha (usually 5 Mukhi) that make up most of the bracelet.
- Focal Rudraksha: one or more beads chosen for a purpose, for example a 7 Mukhi for prosperity, usually placed in the centre.
A bracelet is the easiest way to wear Rudraksha every day. If you are deciding between a bracelet, pendant, mala or keychain, see which way of wearing Rudraksha is best for you.
Rudraksha bracelet for men
Men most often choose a 5 Mukhi Nepal (a big, deep-lined bead), 11 Mukhi (Lord Hanuman: courage), 12 Mukhi (Surya Dev: leadership) or 9 Mukhi (Goddess Durga: protection), on 10 or 12 mm base beads.
| Men's build at GemKrishna | Total |
|---|---|
| 5 Mukhi Nepal (premium big size) on 10 mm base beads, strong thread | ₹1,798 |
| 11 Mukhi + 9 Mukhi (Indonesia), courage and protection | ₹2,097 |
| 12 Mukhi + 7 Mukhi (Indonesia), leadership and prosperity | ₹2,397 |
| 5 Mukhi Nepal with German silver | ₹2,797 |
| Premium Nepal 3 to 7 Mukhi set, no base beads | ₹4,994 |
| Premium Nepal set with 925 silver capping on every bead | ₹6,494 |
For a rugged everyday bracelet, choose strong thread. For a formal look, choose 925 silver capping (₹300 per big Rudraksha) or 925 silver wire. Men who want a crystal and Rudraksha mix, such as tiger eye with 5 Mukhi, can use our Custom Bracelet Builder.
Rudraksha bracelet for women
Yes, women can wear Rudraksha. Rudraksha is worn by women and men alike, and many traditional teachers say there is no restriction.
Women most often choose light 8 mm base beads with a 7 Mukhi (Goddess Mahalakshmi), 6 Mukhi (emotional balance), 2 Mukhi (unity) or a Gauri Shankar (harmony in marriage). 925 silver capping or silver flower spacers make the bracelet look like fine jewellery.
| Women's build at GemKrishna | Total |
|---|---|
| 7 Mukhi on 8 mm base beads, elastic | ₹1,398 |
| 6 Mukhi on 8 mm base beads | ₹1,398 |
| 2 Mukhi Rameshwaram (India) | ₹1,798 |
| 7 Mukhi with 925 silver capping for small Rudraksha | ₹3,398 |
| Gauri Shankar on 8 mm base beads | ₹3,998 |
During periods: views differ. Many teachers today say a woman can wear Rudraksha at all times. Some families prefer to remove it during periods. Follow your own family's practice; either way, there is no harm in it.
Which Rudraksha bracelet is best?
There is no single best Rudraksha. Tradition says the right one is the one that matches your purpose. If you don't have a specific purpose, 5 Mukhi is the most worn and suits everyone.
| Rudraksha | Associated deity | Traditionally worn for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mukhi | Lord Shiva | Focus, spiritual awareness, inner calm |
| 2 Mukhi | Ardhanarishvara | Harmony, unity, relationships |
| 3 Mukhi | Agni Dev | Confidence, energy, letting go of the past |
| 4 Mukhi | Lord Brahma | Knowledge, learning, communication |
| 5 Mukhi | Kalagni Rudra | Peace of mind, daily prayer |
| 6 Mukhi | Lord Kartikeya | Willpower, focus, emotional balance |
| 7 Mukhi | Goddess Mahalakshmi | Prosperity, good fortune |
| 8 Mukhi | Lord Ganesha | Removing obstacles, new beginnings |
| 9 Mukhi | Goddess Durga | Courage, strength, protection |
| 10 Mukhi | Lord Vishnu | Protection from negativity, peace at home |
| 11 Mukhi | Lord Hanuman | Courage, wisdom, fearlessness |
| 12 Mukhi | Surya Dev | Confidence, leadership, vitality |
| 13 Mukhi | Kamdev | Charm, fulfilment of wishes |
| 14 Mukhi | Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva | Intuition, protection, sound decisions |
| Gauri Shankar | Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati | Harmony in marriage and relationships |
| Garbh Gauri | Goddess Parvati with Lord Ganesha | Blessings of motherhood and family |
| Ganesh Rudraksha | Lord Ganesha | Removing obstacles, success in new work |

How to tell if a Rudraksha bracelet is real
- Ask for a lab report for the bead itself, with a unique number you can verify online. One certificate for a whole batch doesn't tell you about your bead.
- Look for an X-ray. Inside, a natural Rudraksha usually has one seed chamber for each mukhi line. The X-ray shows carved extra lines, glued Gauri Shankar, filled beads and moulded fakes. See how to read a Rudraksha X-ray report.
- Check that the origin is on the report, not just in the product title.
- Don't rely on home tests. The water (floating) test, the copper coin test and the "spinning between coins" test do not prove a Rudraksha is real. Read why the water test doesn't work.
- Read the refund policy. A seller who is sure of their beads offers a refund if a bead isn't natural.
At GemKrishna every Rudraksha you choose is X-rayed and tested by GJSPC Laboratory, an independent lab in New Delhi. Its report has a unique number, the bead's photo, weight, dimensions and origin. We do not sell treated or modified Rudraksha, and if a product is not natural as stated by GemKrishna and its lab report, we refund the full amount, including lab report, shipping and making charges. To check a report yourself, see how to verify a lab report online.
Nepal or Indonesian Rudraksha?
A Rudraksha is defined by its mukhi, not its country, so Nepal and Indonesian beads of the same mukhi are traditionally held to have the same or similar effect. Nepal beads are larger, with deeper lines, and rarer, so they cost more. Indonesian (Java) beads are smaller and denser, more affordable, and comfortable for daily wear. India also has a few varieties, such as 2 Mukhi Rameshwaram and 3 Mukhi Himalayan. More in Nepal vs Indonesian Rudraksha.
How to wear a Rudraksha bracelet
Which hand?
Traditionally the right wrist. In practice, many people wear it on whichever wrist is comfortable, for example opposite their watch, and most teachers say either is fine.
Which day to wear it first?
Monday (Somvar), the day of Lord Shiva, is the most popular. Maha Shivratri, a Monday in Sawan, Purnima or your birthday are also chosen. Many people wear it in the morning after a bath.
How to wear it the first time
- Bathe and sit quietly for a moment.
- Hold the bracelet in your right hand.
- Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" a few times, or 108 times if you wish.
- Put it on and say a short prayer for what you are wearing it for.
GemKrishna bracelets arrive already cleansed overnight on selenite and with pran pratishtha done at our mandir, so these steps are traditional and optional. If you'd like a dedicated puja, choose the Pooja / Pran Pratishtha (₹499) or the Vedic Pooja / Pran Pratishtha with video (₹1,999) in the builder.
Rudraksha bracelet rules: what tradition says, and what is flexible
Different teachers and families follow different rules. Here is what is commonly said, so you can decide what fits you.
| Question | What is commonly said |
|---|---|
| Can I sleep wearing it? | Both are common. Some wear it all the time; others take it off at night and keep it in a clean place, such as their puja space. |
| Can I bathe wearing it? | Water is fine, but soap, shampoo and chemicals dry the bead. Many people remove it while bathing, or rinse it with clean water and let it dry afterwards. Remove it before swimming in chlorinated pools. |
| Can women wear it during periods? | Views differ. Many teachers today say yes; some families prefer to remove it. Follow your family's practice. |
| Non-vegetarian food and alcohol? | Stricter traditions advise removing it; many teachers today say it is not required. Some people remove it simply out of respect. |
| Funerals and cremation grounds? | It is commonly advised to remove Rudraksha before attending a funeral or visiting a cremation ground. |
| Can someone else wear my Rudraksha? | Tradition advises against sharing a Rudraksha you have worn. A new Rudraksha can be gifted. |
| What if it falls on the floor? | Pick it up, rinse it with clean water, and wear it again. |
| Can I wear more than one mukhi? | Yes. Combining mukhis in one bracelet is a long-standing practice. |
| Can I wear it with gemstones, crystals, gold or silver? | Yes. Rudraksha is often combined with gemstones and set in silver or gold. If you wear an astrological gemstone on an astrologer's advice, you can ask them too. |
| Can children wear it? | Many families give children a Rudraksha. Choose light 8 mm beads, and supervise very young children, as loose beads are a choking hazard. |
Can you gift a Rudraksha bracelet?
Yes. Gifting a new Rudraksha is widely considered auspicious, especially on festivals, birthdays and new beginnings. Tradition's caution is only about passing on a Rudraksha you have been wearing. For ideas, see Rudraksha gifts for Diwali and every festival and which Rudraksha bracelet to gift whom.
How to care for a Rudraksha bracelet
- Keep it away from soap, perfume, sanitiser and chemicals.
- If it gets dusty, clean it with a soft brush and clean water, and let it dry fully.
- Many people oil their Rudraksha lightly now and then to keep it from drying out.
- Store it in a clean, dry place when you're not wearing it.
- Restring it when the thread or elastic wears. GemKrishna restrings its bracelets for life: send us the beads and we restring and return the bracelet.
Full details in our Rudraksha care guide.
How long does a Rudraksha bracelet last?
A natural Rudraksha bead, cared for well, can last for decades; many families pass beads down. The thread or elastic is what wears out, usually after months to a few years depending on daily use. Silver capping protects the bead edges.
